How Long Until I Can Get My Dentures?
For people missing teeth, dentures represent the beginning of a brand-new life. Patients may naturally be impatient to get their prosthetics. If that’s you, and you’re curious about how long it’ll be until you can get your dentures, here’s a guide that can let you know a little bit more about the time it’ll take to have them finished.
How Long Does It Take to Get Dentures?
The exact amount of time it will take to get your prosthetic will depend on how quickly you can get your appointments scheduled, how fast you heal, and how efficient the lab is in creating them. This will vary heavily from person to person, but most people can expect to get their permanent set of dentures between six weeks and three months after their first appointment.
Steps to Getting Dentures
While it can be hard to say exactly how long it’ll take you to get your dentures, it may be useful to understand what the entire process will look like. Getting dentures usually entails the following:
- Extractions: If you have to have certain teeth removed, you’ll have to do that before you get your dentures. There are two ways to go about this; you can either wait for your gums to heal before getting your dentures, which will entail around 6-8 weeks of recovery, or get a set of temporary dentures placed immediately after your extraction.
- Impression: When you’re ready to start crafting your dentures, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and make note of what you want from your prosthetic. They will likely also furnish you with a temporary set of dentures at this appointment.
- Adjustments: You’ll see your dentist a few times while your dentures are being made. This will allow them to make adjustments and monitor how your healing is progressing. The notes from your adjustments will be sent to the lab, ensuring that your final prosthetic fits the way it ought to.
- Fitting: When your final set of dentures comes in, you’ll meet your dentist for the fitting. In the weeks afterward, your dentist will help you make any necessary changes so that you can have a perfect set of dentures that will last!
